Check out this Fun Engagement Photo Session we shot at some of the most Popular Los Angeles Engagement Locations this summer.   Hopefully it will inspire and give you some ideas for your own Save The Date or Engagement Photos in LA.  This couple was a blast to work with from the planning to the actual day.  The hardest part was narrowing down the locations, especially when Los Angeles has so many fabulous places to photograph. What made it effortless was the fact that they had a theme so it made it a bit easier to decide on what spots to choose.  Their theme was Old Hollywood couple on a date. If you’re considering any of these locations let our experience guide you though.

We started the day by meeting at LACMA (Los Angeles Country Museum of Art) early morning with the goal to shoot in front of the Urban Light, the iconic landmark by Chris Burden.  Our Tip if you’re planning on shooting engagement photos at LACMA, come in early at least one our prior to opening but to play it safe two.  This will allow you to take photos at this amazing location without having your usual tourists in the background.  We showed up of course early and had no trouble finding street parking on the back side of the museum.  They also have their own parking lot but it’s only open during hours of operation.

Our next location was The Grove, a very trendy outdoor mall with a classic looking movie theater.  The Grove is located only minutes away from LACMA so it was very convenient to drive there once we got the photos we wanted at the Urban Lights.  We arrived  as the mall had just opened,  this worked out perfect since there was not many people there yet.  Keep in mind that this very popular location can get very crowded so the later you show up, the less freedom you will have for your shoot.  Our Tip if you’re planning to shoot engagement photos at The Grove, call in advance and get permission to shoot here from their administration office one week in advance.  There was not a fee to shoot here for us but they do require for you to call and inform them of your situation.  Make sure you get the name of the person that helped you.  Shortly after we arrived a security guard approached us and asked if we had called in advice. Once we gave them the name of the person that helped us, he gave us the green light and our shoot was uninterrupted.

Our next stop and the most meaningful location was UCLA.  This gorgeous campus has many amazing areas all around the collage grounds.  Both being UCLA alumni made it very easy for us to just follow and let them show us where they wanted their engagement shoot to take place.  It was a beautiful day but because our shoot happened to be during graduation season we missed a couple of shots due to large crowds.  Our Tip if  you’re planning to shoot engagement photos at UCLA, avoid scheduling during graduation season.  Otherwise expect a large crowds and limited parking.  I also advice for you to read the sings carefully since they do have meter-maids at all hours and they will issue a ticket.

Our last stop for the evening was in DTLA at The Historic 1928 Art Deco Oviatt Building, 617 South Olive Street , downtown Los Angeles.  If you watched the movie Pretty Woman then you will be very familiar with this beautiful iconic building.  This is the location is now known as Cicada Restaurant. Even though the restaurant was closed we were able to take some fabulous photos outside.  We had fun with it by incorporating a vintage camera and having the couple pretend to take selfies with it. Our Tip if you’re planning to shoot engagement photos outside Cicada, in the Oviatt Building, or anywhere in DTLA is to shoot during the week or non-peak hours.  This way you can avoid crowds and not interrupt the restaurant.  If you would like to shoot inside any location in DTLA, make sure you call.  Most restaurants and bars are more than happy for you to take photos for non-commercial purposes, this is like free publicity for them.  There are still some locations may require a fee or simply not allow any photography, so it is best for your to call and confirm.

Crossfit Engagement Photo Ideas by Photographer Alex Diaz and Josh Ponder

We have been looking forward to this CrossFit Engagement shoot since the day we got contacted by the bride to be. She told us her thoughts of shooting at their CrossFit Gym and we just fell in love the idea!  She told us how CrossFit was part of their lifestyle and how they wanted to incorporate into their engagement photos. They had plenty of fun photo ideas that they came across and collected on Pinterest. We certainly used them as inspiration to shoot their own CrossFit Engagement and now we can share with the world to hopefully inspire other couples to shoot their own!

As photographers we love it when our clients have a certain concept they want to achieve for their engagement photos. We love it even more when they have photos to show us the type of shots they hope to capture. This makes the photo session much easier on our end and allows us to know exactly what type of set up we will need.  For this photo session we came prepared with our own studio lighting since the gym’s lights were not going to give us the look we desired. Once we had the lighting set up it took no time to get fabulous photos of the couple in love.

A lot of people ask us if we get offended when our clients come to us with photo ideas from other photographers that they want to try to do for their engagement photos. The answer is not at all! There are a lot of fabulous photographers out there with great ideas and even if we shoot the same photo concept, our photos will be different. It will be a different location, lighting, and most importantly a different couple! Plus our style of photography is very unique, we love to capture out couples in their natural state, even when we are shooting a staged photo. For this particular photo shoot, we came in with about two staged photos that the couple wanted and as the photo session was happening, we ended up doing many other more natural shots of our own!  At the end of the day we shot a beautiful CrossFit Inspired Engagement Photo Session of a couple in love, having fun.

Pin-up Engagement Photo Ideas at Vintage Barbershop by Los Angeles Photographer Alex Diaz and Josh Ponder

We had a great time shooting this super cool Pin-Up Engagement photo shoot. It was shot at this vintage Barbershop Studio in Sana Ana for this gorgeous couple.  Ever since we did our first meeting and got to discuss their engagement concept , we knew that it would turn out fabulous! I mean how can you mess up an engagement shoot when the Bride-to-be and Groom-to-be are totally artistic themselves! They shared their story, how they met and how they’re both hair stylist with the idea to to shoot their engagement at a barbershop. Not just any barbershop, they wanted it to have a certain vintage look to compliment the pin-up style they desired for their engagement photos. They wanted to care of selecting the location since this was something personal for their vision.

The Groom-to-be found the perfect location for their Pin-up Engagement Photography Session. It was exactly what we all visualized, from the lobby area to the chair and entire barbershop. This was no traditional barbershop you see at a promenade but instead this was more like a barbershop studio designed to be photographed. Every spot in the barbershop was beautiful and inspired us.  The owner was extremely hospitable and gave us total freedom to shoot everywhere, we honestly felt at home. This is something that can take a great photo shoot to the next level and you can clearly see it in the photos below.

We originally came in with one main shot in mind. This shot was of the soon to be bride getting her legs shaved by her fiance on the vintage barber chair. After arriving at the location and taking a tour we totally created a story from the shoot. Below is this couple’s story. We shot a ready for magazine quality shoot in a journalistic style, displaying emotions with the colors.  As the couple got closer to each other or excited the colors on the photos change, creating a romantic love story with our color grading.  We hope you enjoy this beautiful Pin-Up Engagement Love Story at a Barbershop!

Halloween Theme Engagement Session | Spooky Engagement

For those of you Halloween lovers that can’t get enough of the Halloween spirit, let this fabulous Spooky Engagement by Los Angeles Photographer Alex Diaz and Josh Ponder inspire you. It has just the right amount of scary for a Halloween theme wedding invitation, save the date or can use years later as a postcard! And it honestly is a lot of fun to shoot!

This particular Halloween Theme Engagement was taken at a local city park. Remember it is all about location, location, location! We wanted to give it a Friday the 13th meets Stephen King’s It feel, and that’s why we selected this park that actually had a lake with lots of trees around. We also loved this location because thanks to the trees, it gave us a great amount of shade and light. The only issue we had was coming up with the right time to shoot, since it is a public park we had to arrive there early enough to guard our spot but then wait for the sun to move the right spot and not give the shoot a washed out look.

Props are just as important when shooting a Halloween Theme Engagement shoot. We bought some yellow caution tape from Home Depot and decorated the area to give it a crime scene look. We then set up a spooky picnic with fun props to give the the couple on their date from hell spot!

This was a lot of fun to shoot because it was very nontraditional and allowed everyone to just have fun with it. The girls even had one of their parents to wear the clown costume and be part of the fun! We totally recommend a Halloween Theme Engagement Photo Session for those that are looking for something unique and creative. It does help if you also love Halloween!

How to Plan the Perfect Secret Engagement Proposal?

Are you planning a secret engagement proposal? Let these vibrant and colorful engagement photos by Los Angeles Wedding Photographer Alex Diaz and Josh Ponder inspire you to plan your version of the perfect secret engagement proposal. We had so much fun being part of this AMAZING surprise engagement proposal party that was put together by the groom-to-be himself! Of course with the help of a many others including friends and family but the end of the day the one that gets full credit is the Groom-to-be Chris for planning such a fabulous surprise for his Bride-to-be Lauren.

Both Chris and Lauren work in the film industry here in Hollywood, CA so his version of a the perfect engagement proposal had to do something with movies. He chose to re-create a scene from the iconic movie, Singing in the Rain to pop the question. He went all out as far as renting out a fabulous Studio with props, lights, event planner, makeup artist, videographers, photographers, food, drinks and even had their closest family members to fly in from all over to join in on the fun!

For us shooting this secret engagement proposal was so much fun. We or course were very familiar with the iconic film and felt very confidant on being able to emulate some shots with the available props. We arrived with an hour to spare to set up our lights and did a couple practice runs to make sure we would be perfect for the actual proposal. Everything turned out FABULOUS but please check out the photos to see for yourself.

OUR ADVICE ON HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT SECRET ENGAGEMENT PROPOSAL:

1. Come up with theme. Be creative and unique, nothing is too much for this very important milestone. You can brainstorm a lot of fun ideas and then cut down or add as you wish.
2. Location, location, location! Select a location that either means something to the both of you or select a location that you are ready to make a very important landmark for the both of you for years to come.
3. Hire an event planner. Ask for help or hire out help. If you want to do something amazing you need a amazing people to help you make it happen. This all depends on what you plan to do but the best results happen when you do hire professionals.
4. Hire a Professional Photographer. You may have friends with phones or even cameras that may offer to photograph your proposal but you should only trust a professional to capture every moment and continue capturing the celebration that takes place after the proposal.
5. Enjoy every moment and share it on social media!

Or maybe you are looking for that perfect location in Southern California that is fun yet romantic. Let this beautiful Santa Monica Engagement Photo Shoot by Los Angeles Photographer Alex Diaz and Josh Ponder inspire you! With so many great local hot spots in Southern California, it’s hard to pick one location for your engagement shoot. But if you are looking for a fun and hip beach that screams out SOCAL, then look no further and select Santa Monica Pier for your engagement or save the date photo session! There is just so much to do at Santa Monica Pier, from relaxing at the beach to getting on the Ferris Wheel! All the fun things to do make it a really popular spot and we honestly love how well it photographs. Every time we shoot at this location our clients end up loving the photos and so do we! This soon to be bride and groom had a wonderful time at Santa Monica Pier.  We all met up early in the morning and began to take photos at the beach before the crowds showed up.  It was nice because we got to take some fabulous photos and not many people got in our way!  Once the pier opened, we followed the lovely couple around as they went on their date. We got some great photos of them playing games, getting on the Ferris Wheel and just have a fun time.  The day went by so fast and it totally did not even feel like a shoot. It was more like hanging out with a couple of friends. We loved how we were able to capture them at a more natural state, unlike the more posed photos out there. Our style is more of a journalistic approach and our clients seem to love.  Take a look at the photos and see for yourself. Please comment, share and lets us know what you think! Romantic Enchanting Engagement Photography

Lauren & Dylan | 2015

This was a perfect engagement photography session that felt effortless. We shot this soon to be bride and groom at Chino Hills, California on an overcast day that gave their engagement photos a perfect romantic look. Lauren knew exactly what she wanted for her engagement photos, so it was pretty easy to deliver this enchanting shoot. Our biggest challenge was coming up with the perfect location since there are so many great choices here in Southern California. The desired look was between a forest engagement and a field engagement shoot. We instantly thought of Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear, but when we came across this amazing location in Chino Hills, we knew it was the one! It was private and simply perfect.

This engagement photo session couldn’t have been planned better. The couple came prepared with beer, pizza and other essentials for a perfect picnic date. Josh and I came prepared with our cannon cameras, a 35mm, an 85mm and a goal in mind. We were determined to capture this couple having a wonderful date without feeling they were at a photo shoot. We totally succeeded and even earned a great review on our Facebook page!
Josh and I are so happy, we love every single photo from this engagement photo session but most importantly we are so happy that Lauren & Brandon loved them too!

Los Angeles Perfect Urban Engagement Photography

Cindy & Jeremy

This awesome urban engagement photo session at the Arts District in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles was not only cool but so much fun shoot! Spending days like this reminds us how much we love what we do. Taking engagement photos and save the date photos are always fun to shoot but when the locations are unique and the couple are super fun, it just makes your job so much more enjoyable!

Here’s a small taste of our little adventure through the Arts District of Los Angeles following the soon to be bride and groom on their date for their urban engagement photos. We started by meeting the couple at The Pie Hole – Los Angles, then we had them pose in front of some of their favorite graffiti street artist. We then took a break from the sun and had some drinks at a supper cool and trendy, hipster bar called, Eighty Two – Los Angeles. We finally finished up the engagement shoot in Korea Town at a very popular grocery store for some fun photos.

We had so much fun hanging out with Cindy & Jeremy, we can’t wait to plan and shoot their wedding in 2016!
